The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center mandates their patients consult a chiropractic physician before surgery for a cervical or lumbar disc based on research published by Dr. Cynthia Peterson at the Orthopedic University Hospital Balgrist in Zurich Swizerland in 2013. Her study showed that in 102 patients with disc injuries, 75% of the patients treated by a chiropractor reported feeling better or much better compared to 62% who had nerve root injections and the cost was significantly less with chiropractic treatment (as well as the risk)
Dr. Peterson also, did a study of 50 patients who had neck pain that radiated into the arm caused by a herniated disc and found that after only 2 weeks of chiropractic care (high-velocity, low-amplitude manipulation), 55% had improvement. After 4 weeks of chiropractic care there was improvement in 68% of the patients and by 12 weeks 85% of the patients improved.
With these two studies and so many other studies showing the cost effectiveness and outstanding patient outcomes with chiropractic care for disc injuries, let’s see how many more hospitals make it mandatory to try chiropractic are before considering surgery or injections.
